2007   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

prestigious international organization HONORS local area resident with lifetime achievement award.

Mary Schoenfeldt, long time local resident and former employee of Everett Police Department, was awarded the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award at 9th World Congress of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF).  ICISF is recognized by the United Nations as the premier Disaster Mental Health organization in the world.

The prestigious award came from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation While presenting the award, President Tom McSherry, said “Mary has committed her life to the field of Crisis Response, has made a significant impact, and we want to recognize and thank her for her commitment and unflagging devotion to her passion … to make the world just a little safer for everyone.”

Ms. Schoenfeldt was recognized for her pioneering (and continuing cutting edge) work in the field of School Crisis Response, Disaster Mental Health and Emergency Management.  Born from an interest while working for the Everett Police Department as a Community Service Officer in the 1980’s, Mary has devoted her life, professionally and personally, to helping people both prevent and recover from traumatic life events.

In addition to devoting her work life to Crisis Response, she also gives countless volunteer hours to her passion. She has given more than 6 years as a Board Member of the Washington State Critical Incident Stress Management Network (currently holds yet another Board Position), has volunteered with Red Cross, was Deputy Incident Commander of Green Cross Academy of Traumatology Katrina Response and also led a team into the New Orleans area to provide services to volunteers who were rescuing animals after Katrina and then returned again to New Orleans to work with St. Bernard Parish Public Schools as they struggled to recover.

Ms. Schoenfeldt has provided assistance in communities such as Littleton Colorado, San Diego California, New York City, New Orleans and others who have experienced devastating events that impacted their communities and schools.  Ms. Schoenfeldt authored the Crisis Response model for all schools in California, helped at a local, state and federal level to adapt the now mandated Incident Command System for school systems and has been an advisor to the US Department of Education and other agencies. She has written 4 books, countless magazine articles, is the subject matter expert for several software programs, has produced a DVD to help schools handle crisis, provides training and is routinely interviewed by print, radio and TV media.  Most recently she appeared on ABC’s Money Matters program speaking after the Amish School Shooting of the cost of school safety.  Her materials are used internationally in locations such as Australia, Israel, Hong Kong, Sweden, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.

While accepting her award, Mary said “When I first started focusing my attention on children and schools almost 20 years ago, I felt like a lone voice in the wilderness.  But because there were people who not only shared my belief, but more importantly believed in ME, I stayed focused and together we helped change the way traumatic incidents are handled in schools and communities around the world.  I accept this award on behalf of us all.”   She credits both active and retired members of the Everett Police Department among those who have both inspired and encouraged her along the way.
